DIY Your Christmas Eve Chinese Takeout

The holiday season started with turkey and all the fixings, then turned into an endless blur of cocktails and canapes, holiday dinners and festive brunches. So if you don't happen to have plans for Christmas dinner, it's not a big deal. Be honest: Wouldn't you rather eat some Chinese food instead?
Now, we're not talking about skipping the festive meal entirely--just trying out a different approach to the menu. Instead of ham or roast turkey, why not share a table crowded with everyone's takeout-style favorites?
Millet-Scallion Pancakes

Forget soggy, limp takeout scallion pancakes. These are extra-crispy thanks to a dose of millet, an ancient grain with a mild corn flavor.
Pork and Chive Dumplings

These dumplings are all about the pork, so try to get the best ground pork you can find. They also can be made ahead and frozen, making them perfect for a party. Just boil, sauce, and serve them up.
Chinese Orange Chicken

This takeout classic is always a crowd-pleaser. It's sweet and citrusy with just the right amount of spice. Be sure to serve it on top of rice to catch all the extra sauce.
Sesame Noodles with Chili Oil and Scallions

These noodles pack some serious heat, thanks to Sichuan peppers in the chili oil. If you can't find thin ramen noodles for the recipe, thin spaghetti or spaghettini is an easy substitute.
Stir-Fried Sesame Baby Bok Choy

A simple side dish like this stir-fried bok choy is a welcome addition to the flavor-packed feast. A drizzle of toasted sesame oil on top of the finished greens makes them both nutty and savory.
Chinese Butter Cookies

These cookies are traditionally part of Chinese New Year, but they're a perfect ending to any big Chinese dinner. They're less sweet than American cookies, but just as buttery.
